Tamsulosin
Urinary and men's healthAlso known as Flomax
Tamsulosin treats the urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate — the weak stream, the constant urge, the three-a.m. trips. It works by relaxing the muscles around the prostate and bladder opening so urine flows more easily. One honest thing to know: it doesn't shrink the prostate, it just relaxes it, so it helps symptoms without changing the gland itself.
How to take it
When
Once a day, about 30 minutes after the same meal each day.
Food
Taking it after the same meal daily keeps the level steady and cuts dizziness.
Avoid
Standing up fast, especially the first few doses — dizziness on standing is common early on.
Good to know
Having cataract or any eye surgery? Mention this medicine to your eye surgeon first.
Missed a dose?
Take it as soon as you remember that day, or skip it if it's nearly time for the next one. If you've missed several days, call your doctor before restarting. Never double up.
