Oxybutynin

Urinary and men's health

Also known as Ditropan XL

Oxybutynin relaxes an overactive bladder muscle — the one that squeezes without warning and sends you sprinting for a bathroom. It cuts the sudden urges, the frequent trips, and the leaks that come with them. Fair warning about the trade-off: dry mouth is THE side effect, and almost everyone gets some of it. Sips of water and sugar-free gum help.

How to take it

When

Usually once a day for the extended-release version — same time daily.

Food

With or without food. Swallow extended-release tablets whole — don't crush or chew.

Avoid

Overheating — it reduces sweating, so be careful in hot weather and hard exercise.

Good to know

In older adults it can cause confusion or memory trouble — tell the doctor if thinking feels foggy.

Missed a dose?

Take it as soon as you remember, unless it's nearly time for the next dose — then just skip the missed one. Never double up.
