Norethindrone

Women's health and hormones

Also known as Camila, Errin

Norethindrone is a progestin-only birth control pill — the "mini-pill." Because it has no estrogen, it's a good fit for many people who can't take combined pills, including while breastfeeding. The catch is the clock: it must be taken at the same time every single day. Even a few hours late can reduce its protection, so a daily alarm is your best friend here.

How to take it

When

The SAME time every day, no exceptions — set an alarm. Every pill in the pack is active.

Food

With or without food — the timing matters far more than the meal.

Avoid

Don't count on it after a late or missed pill — use backup protection and follow the label instructions.

Good to know

It does not protect against STIs — condoms still have a job.

Missed a dose?

If you're more than a few hours late, take it as soon as you remember and use backup contraception (like condoms) for the next 48 hours, following your pill pack's instructions. Then keep taking the rest on time. Never double up.

Common side effects

  • Irregular bleeding or spotting — the classic one
  • Headache
  • Breast tenderness
  • Nausea
  • Mood changes
