Metronidazole

Infections

Also known as Flagyl

Metronidazole treats infections that many other antibiotics can't touch: certain gut, dental, and pelvic infections, plus some caused by parasites. The one rule everyone needs to hear: absolutely no alcohol while you're on it and for three full days after your last dose. Mixing them can cause violent vomiting, pounding headache, and a racing heart — this includes beer, wine, and even some mouthwashes and cough syrups that contain alcohol. Also, a metallic taste in your mouth is normal and goes away when you finish.

How to take it

When

Space doses evenly, exactly as prescribed.

Food

Take it with food or a glass of milk if it upsets your stomach.

Avoid

No alcohol at all — during treatment and for 3 days after your last dose. Check mouthwash and cough syrup labels too.

Good to know

A metallic taste is a normal side effect. Finish the full course even when you feel better.

Missed a dose?

Take it as soon as you remember. If it's close to your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual. Never take a double dose.

Common side effects

  • Metallic taste in your mouth
  • Nausea or loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Dark urine — harmless
