Metoprolol
HeartAlso known as Lopressor, Toprol-XL
Metoprolol is a beta blocker. It blunts the effect of adrenaline on your heart, so your heart beats slower and with less force. That lowers blood pressure, eases the heart's workload, and helps with certain rhythm problems. One important rule: never stop it abruptly — your heart needs to be weaned off gently.
How to take it
When
Same time every day. The regular tablet is often twice daily; the XL version once daily. Follow your label.
Food
The regular tablet works best with or right after a meal. The XL version can be taken either way — don't crush or chew it.
Avoid
Stopping suddenly. Missing several doses in a row can trigger chest pain or worse. Refill early.
Good to know
It can hide the racing-heart warning sign of low blood sugar if you have diabetes.
Missed a dose?
Take it as soon as you remember, unless the next dose is within about 4 hours — then skip. Never take two at once.
