Finasteride

Urinary and men's health

Also known as Proscar, Propecia

Finasteride blocks the hormone that makes the prostate grow, so over months it actually shrinks an enlarged prostate — patience required, this is a marathon, not a sprint. At a lower strength it's also prescribed for male-pattern hair loss. One thing worth knowing up front: sexual side effects like lower desire or trouble with erections are possible, and they're worth an honest conversation with your doctor rather than quietly quitting.

How to take it

When

Once a day, any time — just make it the same time so you don't forget.

With or without food — it doesn't matter.

Avoid

Pregnant women must not handle crushed or broken tablets — it can cause birth defects in male babies.

Good to know

It lowers PSA. Tell any doctor checking you for prostate cancer that you take it.

Missed a dose?

Take it when you remember that day, or just skip it if it's almost time for the next dose. Never double up.
