Ezetimibe

Cholesterol

Also known as Zetia

Ezetimibe lowers cholesterol from a different angle than statins: instead of working in your liver, it blocks your intestines from absorbing cholesterol from food and bile. It's often added on when a statin alone isn't enough, or used solo when statins don't agree with someone. Most people tolerate it well and barely notice they're taking it.

How to take it

When

Once daily, any time of day that you'll actually remember, exactly as prescribed.

Food

With or without food — completely up to you.

Avoid

If you also take a bile acid binder like cholestyramine, the two need to be spaced apart — ask your pharmacist about timing.

Good to know

You won't feel anything change. Your cholesterol blood test is how you and your doctor know it's working.

Missed a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once.

Common side effects

  • Diarrhea or stomach upset
  • Tiredness
  • Joint aches
  • Muscle aches (more likely when combined with a statin)
  • Cold-like symptoms
